The Story

I stood on the edge of darkness,
staring into the black ocean with grey eyes,
with warm sand beneath my feet,
warm tears on my face,
looking down.
They always told me not to look down,
but I couldn't resist;

I always wondered if I would be brave enough,
to stare death in the eyes.

Mommy, look at me!

I closed my eyes and took two steps forwards,
and spiraled off the edge,
remembering to point my toes
and throw my hands together above my head,
just like the ballerina I never was.

I always wondered what life would be like,
if I hadn't been so scared,
and given up everything I tried.

Mommy, I can fly!

I opened my eyes,
and stared into the bright blue sky,
soaring on clouds as cities spun beneath me,
falling backwards through time.
Bright lights filled the sky,
a white blindness bringing tears to my eyes,
for I could feel the hearts beating beneath me,
broken hearts that beat on;
not the hearts of cowards like me.

I closed my eyes and made a wish,
because I always wondered what it would taste like
to kiss a star,

I opened my eyes,
and soared through the black midnight sky,
a supernova passing by on my right,
nothing more than an explosion of scarlet gold
burned forever on my heart,
extinguished by the black hole on my left
that tore me farther and farther from my dreams.

Mommy, space is colder than I thought it would be.
Is this what death feels like?

My very own bright star,
growing weaker on the horizon,
because I never did make the right choice.

Mommy, was I really ever alive?
